La Cañada Residential Complex

Located in a natural amphitheater with south-facing views towards a perfectly conserved holm-oak grove in the Santa Fé area, this project required great commitment and exploration of the existing conditions. The site, an abandoned landfill for waste materials from sand quarries in Mexico City, needed important consolidation works. The semicircular form with steep slopes was used to build five blocks in a radial layout, like the stones in a rounded archway. With this solution, all the buildings have a south orientation and can enjoy the wonderful views.

The stepping of the buildings has two reasons: to reproduce and express the original slope of the gorge, and to have terraces on all the floors. Each level is set back from the one below, and this dynamism is emphasized by recesses and projecting ledges.

Mexico City has a temperate climate nearly all year long, so large protected terraces were designed as extensions to the indoor living spaces.
